Newly hired Admissions Ambassadors at the New Hire Mixer in December.
You’ve seen their takeovers on social media. You’ve been on their campus tours. You’ve envied their stylish purple track jackets. But do you really know what it takes to become an NYU Admissions Ambassador?
At NYU, we like to say that the Admissions Ambassadors open the front door to the University. That’s because they are often the first point of contact for applicants and their families. Furthermore, many applicants will interact with an ambassador well before they speak to their regional counselor. For that reason, our team of almost 200 highly skilled, passionate students are a vital piece of the recruitment puzzle. The Admissions Ambassador position requires patience, flexibility, maturity, and strong communication skills. Without those skills they couldn’t answer the 75,000 annual phone calls and greet almost 100,000 guests at our welcome centers in Brooklyn and Manhattan each year.

As one of the managers of the ambassador program, I spend the fall semester coordinating the hiring and selection process. Our application process has two parts. First, applicants are asked to submit a video detailing why they want to be an Admissions Ambassador. Then, they are invited to participate in the Admissions Ambassador Academy (AAA). AAA is a group interview where applicants engage in a number of activities and showcase their public speaking and interpersonal skills. Finally, once interviews are complete, our professional staff comes together to make our hiring decisions.
This year we had over 300 applicants, and I am pleased to introduce you to our newest class of ambassadors. I chatted with a few of them at our New Hire Mixer in December. They told me all about what drew them to the position and what they’re most looking forward to in their new role.
“I wanted to be an ambassador because I wanted to take on the same role I experienced when I was applying. I thought it was really welcoming and I wanted to give that same advice and vibe to other applying students. And I’m super excited to give tours and help out prospective students in figuring out if NYU is really right for them.”
Michelle, Kenville, NJ
“I wanted to give girls and women of color somebody to look up to and say, ‘Oh, if she can do it, I can do it too.’ I’m really excited to meet all the people that want to come to NYU and share all the awesome things about it!”
Nadia, Dallas, TX
“I’m most excited about getting to know all these wonderful people that are like-minded and experiencing all the wonders and discovering new things and aspects about NYU together. And make sure to give everyone a fair shot at the chance to be at NYU.”
Sebastian, Parsippany, NJ
“I applied to be an ambassador because I remember the impact that the ambassadors had when I came here on a tour and then again at Weekend on the Square, which was so much fun. I’m most excited to join this community of people who have such different NYU stories and who use those different experiences to pass that on to a new generation of NYU students, and I just want to be a part of that.”
David, Houston, TX
NYU Admissions Ambassadors are an essential component of the work we do in admissions. They provide authentic representations of the NYU student experience and educate prospective students and their families about college admissions. I really appreciate the work they do, and I’m grateful that I get to work with a group of young people who bring their best selves to every shift every single day. I’m so excited to welcome the newest ambassadors to the team. And they’re so excited to meet you too!
