Science of Smart Cities (SoSC)
Science of Smart Cities (SoSC) introduces students to topics in engineering, computer science, and technology to make cities more sustainable, efficient, and safer. Working in teams, students design projects using what they learn about electronics and circuitry, coding, microcontrollers, sensors, and other hardware. During final presentations, students demonstrate how their project creatively provides a solution to a real-world challenge.
How to Apply
Eligible applicants live in New York City and are currently enrolled age 12 by the start of the program but not older than 14 on the day program begins. Students should have a strong academic record and demonstrated interest in STEM and be able to participate for the full duration of the 3-week program.
To apply, students must submit an online application form, which includes questions about their academic history as well as two short essay responses.
Course Work
This program will deepen students' knowledge of energy, engineering, computer science, natural phenomena, physical sciences, and urban/environmental science. This program engages interest in STEM skills, studies, research, and careers. Through cutting-edge, hands-on curriculum and activities, SoSC students learn how microcontrollers, sensors, and other hardware work; explore circuitry, electronics, and coding; and understand how scientists and engineers apply fundamental knowledge, STEM-based skills, and innovative solutions to challenges in the real world. Students develop projects, demonstrations, and final presentations in a materials-rich environment. Additionally, SoSC students participate in Irondale, a mandatory program led by theater teaching artists who use improv to boost communication and public speaking skills, adding a unique dimension to their learning experience.
Our K-12 education program is an immersive journey into the realms of engineering, computer science, and technology, all geared towards enhancing the sustainability, efficiency, and safety of urban spaces. At SoSC, we believe in empowering students to become problem solvers and innovators through hands-on experiences and collaborative teamwork.
SoSC ignites a passion for STEM by engaging students in hands-on learning, research, and exploration of potential STEM careers. Through an immersive learning experience, students acquire in-depth knowledge about microcontrollers, sensors, electronics, coding principles, and the practical applications of scientific and engineering concepts. They're encouraged to develop and present their projects in a resource-rich environment.
A noteworthy distinction of SoSC is that we're committed to fostering well-rounded, innovative thinkers equipped to tackle the challenges that the cities of tomorrow will present. We believe in blending theoretical knowledge with practical applications to prepare students for a future where creativity and problem-solving are paramount. Correspondingly, our program goes beyond the conventional classroom setup. Students actively participate in 'Irondale,' an engaging initiative led by theater teaching artists. This unique blend of improv techniques enhances their communication and public speaking skills, adding a distinct dimension to their educational journey
Student Life
SoSC students attend classes taught by NYU faculty and graduate students Monday-Friday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Classes are located at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering in Downtown Brooklyn.
Classes are highly-interactive and hands-on, offering students the experience to work with materials, tools, and software programs that develop their skills in research, design, and engineering.
To participate, students must be able to commit to the full two-week program and be able to get to and from campus each day (early drop off starts at 8:30 AM). Snacks and lunch are not provided, so students should bring their own food (or money to purchase food).
