Gain Global Career Experience with an Internship Abroad
NYU students find internships all over the world. Whether their home campus is New York City, Shanghai, or Abu Dhabi, NYU students can be found completing internships across industries, across the globe. And this global professional experience is part of what helps set them apart. Many students complete internships while they’re studying away at one of NYU’s 16 global sites. Here, staff members help you land a position for the semester or academic year away from your home campus. In many cases, you can even earn academic credit for your internship.
Maddy Bamba | Global Liberal Studies
HELLO LOVE, London, UK
For Maddy Bamba, a Global Liberal Studies major, her study away experience at NYU London became the gateway to a unique internship at HELLO LOVE, a social enterprise that supports artists, brands, and charities. Cofounded by NYU Stern School of Business alumnus Kevin Helton and brand expert Jane Hutchison, HELLO LOVE offers internships to NYU London students, giving them the opportunity to join a global network while making local change.
“My passion for the arts drew me to HELLO LOVE, along with its founders’ ambitions and goals,” Maddy says. “Jane and Kevin run an incredible shop. They blend artistic expression with community impact. It was really exciting to be part of that.”
At HELLO LOVE, Maddy learned what it takes to run a small, values-driven business. Every shift was different. Some days she packaged products, worked behind the cafe counter, and helped customers around the shop. Other days she conducted research for Libra, HELLO LOVE’s health app aimed at cancer prevention.
“The assortment of tasks I completed grew my appreciation for the creativity and flexibility required to run a small business,” Maddy states.
Mittali Rungta | NYU Shanghai
Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation, Kathmandu, Nepal
Students at NYU Shanghai can apply for the Center for Career Development’s Social Impact Internship Grant. This helps fund living expenses for students pursuing unpaid internships at nonprofit organizations. Mittali Rungta received this grant, which allowed her to intern in Nepal with the Leonardo Edward Shrestha Foundation. The organization provides financial and emotional support for families of children undergoing cancer treatment.
“As a Business and Finance major at NYU Shanghai, I am constantly searching for ways to merge empathy with strategy and create meaningful impact,” says Mittali. “I chose this internship because it aligned perfectly with both my academic interests and personal values.”
Mittali helped with fundraising efforts and identified potential sponsors and local partners. She also worked directly with families, helping them build personal fundraising platforms.
“This internship reaffirmed that no matter what career path I pursue, empathy will always be at the heart of my decisions,” she says.
Raia Badurina | Tisch School of the Arts
Atlas Entertainment, Los Angeles, CA
For NYU students interested in forging a career in the entertainment and media industry, there’s no better city than Los Angeles to study and work. NYU Los Angeles students receive tremendous support in finding internships that are the right fit. In addition to the Wasserman Center, students at the site are offered specific career resources that include an industry relations coordinator as well as networking opportunities with the more than 15,000 NYU alumni in the region.
Past students have worked in a range of industry areas, from record labels to public relations. Raia Badurina, a Film and Television major at NYU Tisch, worked as a literary intern for the production company Atlas Entertainment during her summer at NYU Los Angeles. Some of her responsibilities included managing emails for the company’s literary team, reading scripts, and taking notes for the president.
“I was excited to work for some of the top producers in Hollywood,” Raia says. “Charles ‘Chuck’ Roven is the man behind so many amazing films, like Oppenheimer, Uncharted, and Suicide Squad. Being able to learn from his team and assist projects by some of my favorite creatives was such a wonderful experience. It was a great intro experience to what being an assistant might be like, which I found super helpful in preparing for my future.”
