At the NYU School of Professional Studies (SPS) Schack Institute of Real Estate, aspiring professionals learn the skills to buy, sell, negotiate, and network with the best. What’s more, consistently ranked as one of the top undergraduate real estate programs in the United States, Schack equips students to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced industry. And as the field evolves, one transformation stands out: the rise of women.
At NYU, this trend is especially evident, with many of the University’s real estate clubs now led by women. “Many years ago, real estate was a male-dominated profession,” explains Lindsey Kalish. Actually, she’s a Real Estate major at SPS. “However, the industry has become much more gender inclusive, with a growing number of female C-suite executives leading the way. Now this trend is only rising as more women take on prominent roles in the field.”
Laying the Foundation for NYU
Real Estate major Valerie Burridge grew up in a small town in Texas. “Over the years, I watched all the open land around me quickly develop and absolutely transform the city,” she recalls. “I experienced how new shopping centers and restaurants can bring vibrancy to such a small town.” As a result, she decided to embark on a career in real estate—she knew that NYU SPS offered everything she needed. “I read about all the real estate classes, the Schack Real Estate Club (SREC), and the networking opportunities,” she explains. “Soon, I realized that NYU was the perfect place for me.” What’s more, Lindsey shares a similar sentiment. “I chose NYU SPS because of its small, intimate class size and esteemed professors,” Lindsey says. “Plus, US News & World Report ranked Schack as the number three real estate undergraduate degree program in the United States.”
Paving the Way With the Schack Real Estate Club
In an industry that relies on relationships, the SREC gives students the opportunity to connect and collaborate. For example, events such as fireside chats and site tours allow students to network with top companies and professionals. “The panels are something I can’t believe we get to do for free,” shares Valerie, who serves on the club’s board. In addition to her major, she’s minoring in Architecture and Urban Design. “You get to spend time with some of the best professionals at leading companies, including some who probably hold your dream job.”
“One of our flagship events is the annual Schack Student Summit,” adds Lindsey. As a matter of fact, she joined the club in her first year and now serves as president. “Last year, we hosted around 250 students from NYU and nearby institutions.” Reflecting on her time with SREC, she says, “I joined the Real Estate Club in the fall of my first year and immediately loved it. Through the club, I’ve connected with classmates, upper-class students, and industry leaders. Today, as a senior, I proudly serve as president.”
Breaking Ground With the Women in Real Estate Group
While women are making waves across NYU’s real estate program and club, the Schack Women in Real Estate Group offers a unique space. What’s more, this group is open to all NYU students. Here, real estate students can connect with themselves and each other. “The group’s goal is to provide informal networking opportunities. Members can connect with their peers and engage with accomplished women in the industry,” explains Lindsey, who is the club chair. “Through these connections, students can build a supportive network. Additionally, they gain valuable insights from female industry leaders.”
Moving In to the Future
Relationships are the key to success in real estate, and both Lindsey and Valerie stress the importance of taking every opportunity to meet new people. “Don’t hesitate to attend every real estate event you’re invited to or hear about,” says Lindsey. “In fact, the more you network and engage, the more people you’ll meet. That opens up greater opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, and jobs.” Valerie echoes this advice. “Network, network, network,” she urges. “Also, some of the greatest opportunities come from a simple coffee chat. So, put yourself out there and be confident in yourself and your education.” After all, for women who are passionate about real estate and ready to join a thriving, supportive community, NYU SPS might be the perfect place to build a future.
