When I was in high school, I had trouble deciding on my college major. There are so many subjects I am interested in, and I didn’t want to be limited to studying just one. NYU gives its students the opportunity to pursue all of their multifaceted passions and interests, at once, through a double major. At NYU students can double major in the College of Arts and Science, and pursue a cross-school minor in any of NYU’s undergraduate schools.

I am a Film and TV student in the Tisch School of the Arts, a Political Science double major in the College of Arts and Science, and a Web Programming and Applications minor (also through the College of Arts and Sciences!).

How Did my Double Major Come to be?

I started out as a Film and TV major, and decided to declare a double major in politics after I took a film history class called Women in the Director’s Chair. One of my assignments for the class was to make a campaign video for a female candidate for congressional office. This assignment was a perfect cross of my interests in politics and film. I chose to make my video about Amy McGrath. I worked with a team of four female students in Tisch, researching McGrath’s policies, her campaign, her message, and her story. Together, we filmed a heartwarming story about her political views and plans.

I loved every second of it.

I loved it so much I went straight to my advisor to learn how to declare a double major. For me, it was simple. I had to fill out a form, and revise my schedule for the next few semesters to incorporate the Political Science major requirements. For the major I needed to take 10 major-specific classes. It was completely doable with film.

Interested in Double Majoring?

The first step in figuring out your double major is talking about it with an advisor. If you are double majoring outside of your primary school it may be helpful to speak to a cross-school advisor. Cross-school advisors are aware of the requirements of every school at NYU. They can give a better idea of how to pursue your second major or minor. Some majors have more requirements than others, so it may be more difficult or time consuming to pursue. However, you shouldn’t let this discourage you.

With the right amount of planning you can double major in even the most rigorous of subjects.

After you speak with your advisor, schedule, schedule, and schedule! Plan out your next few semesters with both of your major requirements. Also remember to balance your schedule, make sure not to overload yourself! I am not taking an extra year, or semester to complete my double major, because I made sure to keep in contact with my advisor, and we made an attainable plan.

As a current student, I can tell you, if you’re thinking of pursuing a double major, it is possible, and NYU is the place to do it!
