Brotherhood in the City: Fraternity Life at NYU

My initiation to Psi Upsilon in fall 2024!
Are you interested in joining a fraternity at NYU? Greek life at NYU allows students to build lifelong friendships, develop leadership skills, and become part of a close-knit community. Here, fraternities are organized under two councils. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) includes Delta Lambda Phi, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Psi Upsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Zeta Beta Tau, and Zeta Psi. The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) includes Alpha Phi Alpha, Lambda Upsilon Lambda, Nu Alpha Phi, and Pi Delta Psi.
Rush Process
The rush process for fraternities at NYU is an exciting period when students can explore different organizations, meet brothers, and find the best fit for their values. Unlike traditional campuses with a centralized “frat row,” NYU’s fraternities operate without official housing. Therefore, rush events are crucial for potential members to experience each chapter’s culture.
Rush typically takes place at the beginning of each semester. During this time fraternities host various events, such as “Meet the Brothers,” sporting events, and game nights. There are no obligations during rush, so you can attend as many or as few events as you wish.
At the end of the process, fraternities offer bids (official invitations) to those who align with their values. If you accept, you begin the new member education process. This process introduces you to the fraternity’s history, traditions, and expectations before initiation.

My Fraternity Experience
When I first arrived at NYU, I knew little of Greek life and wasn’t sure if I wanted to join a fraternity. However, everything changed during my semester studying away at NYU London. There, I met Daniel, who introduced me to Psi Upsilon. He shared his personal experiences, highlighting the sense of community and the opportunities for personal growth. Intrigued, I decided to rush Psi Upsilon the following semester.
Rush week turned out to be an exciting and eye-opening experience. I met so many new people and genuinely enjoyed every event. The welcoming atmosphere and the strong brotherhood made me feel at home. By the end of the week, I was overjoyed to receive a bid to pledge Psi Upsilon. The pledging process itself was an unforgettable journey. Each pledge is paired with a “big”: a current brother who mentors and supports their “little” throughout the process. My big, Ian, played a huge role in offering advice and ensuring that I felt encouraged every step of the way.
Beyond individual mentorship, the bond I formed with my pledge class and brothers was just as impactful. We started as strangers but quickly became a tight-knit group. What I didn’t expect from this journey was gaining a second family!

What Brothers in Different Fraternities Say
- “After my first rush event, I found a good group of people that I can depend on. Psi Upsilon has a great community where everyone supports each other academically and socially!” — Ian (Psi Upsilon – Delta Chapter)
- “During rush, I could just be me. In the city, it’s different. It’s so hard to make friends and keep friends, so it’s nice to know that a group of guys are here to support you.” — Aidan (Kappa Sigma – Gamma Zeta Chapter)
- “I’m an international student, and I didn’t know anything about Greek life. I went to one of the rush events, and I instantly found brotherhood. Pi’s are a family for me.” — Brandon (Pi Delta Psi – Psi Zeta Chapter)
- “I like the really close brotherhood. There is not only the social aspect but the professional aspect. We meet other people from outside of campus, and that’s helped me develop as a person.” — Thomas (Nu Alpha Phi – Epsilon Chapter)
- “I feel like every SigEp member is my good friend. I’ve met a lot of people that I can connect with.” — Konrad (Sigma Phi Epsilon – New York Gamma Chapter)

Why Join an NYU Fraternity?
Joining a fraternity is more than just attending social events. It’s about finding a community within a university as vast and diverse as NYU. For many students, Greek life provides not only a sense of belonging but also a valuable support system. Additionally, it offers numerous opportunities for leadership, service, and professional growth. Through this, fraternities foster lifelong friendships, creating a network of brothers who encourage and challenge each other throughout college and beyond.
One of the biggest benefits of joining a fraternity is the connections you build. These connections extend beyond your chapter and into the wider Greek community. With opportunities for mentorship and networking, being part of a fraternity can open doors when you least expect it. Whether you’re looking for personal development, leadership experience, or simply a group of people who feel like family, a fraternity can provide that and more! At a place like NYU, where it’s easy to feel lost in the crowd, joining a fraternity can turn the city into a home.
