Introducing: The FalseSettos

The TL;DR
During my very first week at NYU, I was excited to dive into the comedy scene, but quickly realized that something was missing: musical improv and sketch! So my friend Yohann and I decided to create our own troupe to fill the missing niche, The FalseSettos. We crafted a team, held auditions, ran weekly rehearsals, and eventually became an official TUSC-funded club. Since then, we’ve performed multiple shows, expanded our team, and even connected with other college troupes. Now we’re NYU’s only musical improv & sketch comedy troupe!
The FalseSettos are pulling you in!

The Origin Story

During my first week at NYU, I was eager to jump into campus life and find my community. Luckily, at the beginning of each semester, NYU Welcome is designed to help students explore various clubs and get involved on campus. One of the highlights of NYU Welcome for me was the comedy showcase featuring all the troupes on campus. I went with my friend Yohann and was laughing the whole time. The show was hysterical, and I loved every minute of it—but something was missing. Where was the musical improv and sketch? It wasn’t there.

The Creation Story

After the show, Yohann and I conducted some research to discover that NYU did not have a team that combined musical improv and sketch. We were disappointed by this and wanted to make a change. So we decided to create our very own club from scratch, The FalseSettos, and this is how we did it.

Step 1: Creating a Presence

The very first thing we did was create our game plan for the team. We wanted to have a team that people would be interested in, but also a team that ran smoothly. To start and get the message out about our team, we created our Instagram account, which you can follow @thefalsesettosnyu. After that, we started using our platform to find our missing teammates.

Step 2: Choosing the Team

The next thing we did was host two days of auditions in the Silver Center. We met so many talented people that made our choice extremely hard, but we ultimately landed on creating our original FalseSettos team. From there, we started holding weekly meetings to make our team more established and began planning for our first show. Additionally, we started the paperwork to become an official club on campus through the Tisch School of the Arts by applying through the Tisch Undergraduate Student Council.

Step 3: Applying with TUSC

Meeting with the Tisch Undergraduate Student Council or TUSC was intimidating, but a straightforward process nonetheless. We did our paperwork and set a date. At our meeting, we presented our club idea to the panel and waited to hear their feedback. Drum roll…. we became an OFFICIAL NYU CLUB!!!

The Present Story

Currently, the FalseSettos has expanded to 10 team members, with three different generations of the team. Since our establishment, we have put on four shows: “Sneak Peek”, “The Official Show”, “Egg Hunt”, & “Who’s Your Daddy” that have been at different venues across campus, including Riese Lounge in the Tisch School of the Arts!

The Future Story

The future is bright for the FalseSettos. We are planning to have three shows this upcoming Fall 2025, as well as performing in the NYU Comedy Welcome Week performance that started it all.

Despite having over 600 clubs at NYU, you may not always find your niche. But what’s so nice is that you can create your community. Since the establishment of the FalseSettos, our team has connected with other comedy troupes at universities such as Brown & Yale, made a presence on campus, and become the premier musical sketch and improv team. We have students ranging across multiple different schools such as the College of Arts and Sciences, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and the Tisch School of the Arts. Overall, we are so excited about the team, and personally, I am so honored to see Yohann and my vision come alive. We hope to see you in the fall!
