The NYU A Cappella Life

When the words “a cappella” come up, many people’s minds immediately turn to Pitch Perfect. This film made the a cappella world and its competitions famous around the world. You might be surprised to know that the competition from the film is not just fictional. It’s a real competition—one that I have participated in. As a tenor in the NYU a cappella group, Vocollision, my experience in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) was just as exciting as the movie depicted it. Competing at this level was a fantastic experience filled with music, friendship, and thrilling performances.

From the quarterfinals here in New York City to the national semifinals in Boston, the entire ICCA journey made us feel like we were in a real-life version of Pitch Perfect. Performing on these stages with friends, after putting so much effort into our set, was a wonderful and memorable experience.

Quarterfinals in NYC

Our ICCA journey began with the quarterfinals competition in New York City. For several months, we rehearsed our set, which included singing while performing carefully designed choreography. This performance is a high-energy event that brings together multiple groups from across the region. Every group brings their A-game to showcase their skills and impress the judges and spectators. Both the first- and second-place groups advance to the next round of the competition in Boston. Two years ago, we placed second, and in the most recent competition, Vocollision secured first place! This achievement felt surreal.

What made this competition special was the sense of community that came from seeing other talented groups compete. We all shared a mutual love for music and singing. Additionally, competing side by side with friends is the real value of the competition, regardless of how we placed.

Once we secured our spot in the next round, the anticipation for the semifinals in Boston began to build. It was time to take our performance to the next level and continue the journey, just like in Pitch Perfect.

Semifinals in Boston

Thanks to the money NYU provides to all clubs, along with some fundraising we did ourselves, we managed to book transportation and lodging near the competition venue in Boston. After a rushed breakfast, we made our way to the performance center. Knowing that hundreds of groups had competed in the same building before gave it a magical aura. It made us feel the weight of history while carrying the excitement of what was to come. This was our chance to showcase the hard work and passion we had for our group, but more importantly, it was an opportunity to have fun.

Having spent so much time together both inside and outside rehearsals, there was a wonderful sense of unity and purpose that bonded all of us. Just like in Pitch Perfect, these trips were as much about team bonding as they were about the competition itself. The friendships we built on and off the stage are some of the most lasting and meaningful parts of the journey.

When we finally took the stage at Berklee College of Music, we knew we had to push our performance to the highest level yet. Our music director, a student member, carefully crafted our setlist to showcase a fresh sound that highlighted our group’s particular strengths. We had to make every move, harmony, and note flawless. Every second was unforgettable. We ended up placing fourth and also received a special award for Outstanding Choreography.

Our ICCA journey was full of fantastic and unforgettable moments: triumphs, challenges, and a lot of personal growth. From winning quarterfinals to competing on prestigious stages, Vocollision’s rise in the a cappella world is something that belongs on a movie screen. I consider myself lucky to have shared these moments with incredible people I get to call friends. Although my senior year has made it challenging to stay as involved with the group, I am thankful for every song I sang alongside them. If you are interested in exploring NYU a cappella groups, I can’t recommend Vocollision more highly.

Hi! My name is Dre, and I’m a senior at TISCH studying Film & TV. I work as an Admissions Ambassador, a Teacher’s Assistant, and I’m part of Vocollision, a nationally recognized acapella group. When I’m not behind the camera on a film set, you’ll find me running marathons around NYC or editing projects at the TISCH building. Originally from Mexico, my time at NYU has been filled with amazing opportunities to explore the city and its culture. I’m always finding new inspiration around every corner!
