A new year is fast approaching, and that means the final NYU application deadlines are around the corner. If you haven’t completed your 2025–2026 NYU Common Application yet, now’s the time. We’re sharing everything you need to know—plus a few bonus tips—right here!
NYU Common Application: How to Get Started
The NYU Common Application allows you to apply to one or more of NYU’s campuses in New York City, Shanghai, or Abu Dhabi. First things first: You need to set up your account. We recommend using a personal email address—if you use your school email, you risk losing access later and missing important messages from NYU.
Now, on to the application! You’ll begin by entering some basic details about yourself and your background. Later, you’ll have the chance to describe the activities you’re involved in and passionate about. Since you can’t include everything, prioritize the experiences that best align with your interests and goals, demonstrate where you’ve made the most impact, and reflect how you’ve grown. You can also use the Common Application essay to tell us even more about yourself.
If you choose to submit test scores, which are optional for the 2025–2026 cycle, you can add them to your application as well.
Getting Specific
After adding NYU to your ‘My Colleges’ list, you can start answering questions specific to NYU. Here, you’ll need to say whether you’re applying Early Decision or Regular Decision and which campuses you’re applying to. Depending on which NYU campus(es) you pick, you’ll be asked about your academic interests and housing preferences. From there, we’ll take you through the other items you’ll need to submit, including your transcripts and letter(s) of recommendation. (Only one letter is required, but we accept up to three!)
To apply to an artistic program, you’ll need to submit a portfolio and, in some cases, complete an audition. Because each creative program has its own requirements, check the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and Tisch School of the Arts department websites to confirm exactly what is needed. Plan to submit your application a few weeks before the deadline to ensure you have enough time to schedule your audition and upload all materials.
Have More to Say? Complete Our Optional Essay Question
Next up: the supplemental (and completely optional) essay question! If you’ve finished the rest of your application and still want to share more, this 250-word essay is your chance. This year’s prompt asks you to reflect on experiences that have taught you how to bridge divides, helping people learn and work together. If you choose to respond, it’s another opportunity to tell us what ideas and moments have shaped you while demonstrating the analytical and creative thinking you’ll bring to NYU.
A Few Final Tips
Even if you think you’re done, be sure to review your entire application carefully. Double-check that you’ve completed every section, sent all required documents, and paid the application fee (or received a waiver). This is one reason we recommend submitting your application at least one week before the deadline—you’ll have more time to address anything that might be missing. After you apply, you’ll get access to the Applicant Portal, where you can make changes and check your application status.
Another critical note: Don’t wait until you hear back on your application to apply for financial aid. Financial aid deadlines are strict and will pass before admissions decisions are released.
