At NYU, a commitment to sustainability is as wide-ranging as the topic itself. It’s woven into everything from the design of your residence hall and the shape of your curriculum to the clubs you join and the career opportunities you explore. No matter what you plan to study—even if you don’t know yet!—considering your future through the lens of sustainability can be a powerful exercise. The world’s future depends on sustainability. It’s central to leadership in every sector, from media and the arts to finance and technology.

Rubin Hall’s Retrofit

Rubin Hall is a first-year residence at NYU’s campus in New York City. When you enter the building, the lobby’s charming wood panels and checkerboard floor may send you back to the 1920s. That’s when this New York City landmark was a hotel! However, you may not know that Rubin Hall is also one of the largest Passive House retrofits in the world. A renovation that substantially decreases a building’s energy demand, this type of retrofit balances rigorous energy efficiency with comfortable living spaces. When Rubin Hall reopened in 2025, students found their rooms and common spaces—such as the dance studio, music room, and kitchenettes—upgraded with custom windows, improved insulation, better cooling systems, and more. These renovations resulted in an estimated 50 percent reduction in energy and water use as well as a 100 percent reduction in the use of fossil fuel! In other words, what’s good for the planet is a part of daily life for students at NYU.

NYU Swap Shop

When students move into NYU, they’re invited to stop by the NYU Swap Shop, a new student-run pop-up marketplace for donated clothing, decor, furniture, and other essentials. Hanin Amer, a student at NYU Silver School of Social Work, is one of the project’s organizers. She told NBC News about her motivation for keeping gently used items out of the landfill. “Rather than making it an individual responsibility, it’s a collective responsibility. It’s about the community,” she said.

  • 10,000+ pounds of potential treasure
  • 1,800 student shoppers
  • 9,100 items

Green Week

The entire NYU network celebrates Earth Day through service and learning events. From New York City to Abu Dhabi, students engage in campus initiatives, events, and community service opportunities that focus on sustainability. This year at NYU Washington, DC, students toured the United States Botanic Garden. There, they watched a screening of The Lorax, discussed environmental stewardship, and competed in an eco-themed trivia night.

Get Funded Through Green Grants

If you have a creative idea that can improve NYU’s environmental impact, funding can help bring it to life. With support from a microgrant of up to $3,000, you can test out your concept. Then, when you’re ready with a comprehensive program, a Green Grant—offering up to $20,000—can help make it a reality. Funding is available for projects across NYU’s global network.

Check out a few projects supported by NYU Green Grants:

Explore Global Health Equity at NYU Shanghai

Whether you want to team up with a professor to research rising sea levels or to understand the latest developments in regenerative tourism, you’ll find research centers and institutes across NYU’s network focused on environmental impact. Housed at NYU Shanghai, the Center for Global Health Equity (CGHE) fosters cutting-edge research in climate change and environmental health as well as other health-related fields. Through the CGHE, students learn directly from experts, take courses that introduce them to current challenges, and connect with volunteer and internship opportunities.

The CGHE’s Undergraduate Global Health Student Organization welcomes students from any major to learn about global health equity through reading group discussions, workshops, and more.
