Admissions Ambassadors stand in front of Skirball Theatre

If you’ve ever walked around Washington Square Park on a weekday, you’ve probably seen us in the iconic purple track jackets. We are NYU’s mightiest fleet: the Admissions Ambassadors. Let’s pull back the curtain on what this on-campus job entails and how you can join the next cohort of ambassadors!

So What Do We Do?

If your answer to this question is “give tours,” you are absolutely correct! We do give tours, up to three a day all year long. These tours are tailored for prospective students and their families to experience our campus without walls. We walk to iconic NYU buildings, describe campus life, and give the inside scoop about our university experience.

While these tours are so important to introducing NYU to the outside world, we do so much more! Read on to learn more about our other responsibilities.

Tours

Once a week, we reserve tours for certain groups. One is the College Connections groups, made up of elementary and middle school aged students. These tours offer exposure to what college is all about. We walk them through dining halls, making your own schedule, and living in resident halls. We also welcome students through our partnerships with Community-Based Organizations, usually composed of high school students. These visits are part of a broader college access effort and are a great opportunity to share resources and answer questions.

Office Hours

“Hi! Thank you for calling the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, how can I help you today?” If you’ve called NYU and heard this answer, chances are you’ve spoken to one of our Admissions Ambassadors! Ambassadors work the phone lines to answer questions, offer guidance, and find resources to assist those who may not be able to make the visit to campus.

Special Marquee Events

These events occur throughout the year, welcoming prospective students and families to campus and offering a deeper look at NYU. There are panels, information sessions, tours, and more. In the fall, we offer Open House and in the spring, we have Weekend on the Square. As Ambassadors, we make these events happen by welcoming hundreds of visitors, guiding them around campus, and sharing our own NYU stories.

We’ve just scratched the surface of what Ambassadors get up to. We also greet guests, restock our admissions office, lead virtual tours, interact with incoming students on social media, write articles for MeetNYU, answer emails, and much more!

What do YOU get out of this?

There are so many opportunities to give back to the community and share what college is all about. But what does this job do for you?

We have a welcoming community with a supportive team and fun activities…we frequently enjoy trivia taco nights together. There are chances for professional development with special trainings, public speaking, and the chance to take on leadership roles. These opportunities let our ambassadors thrive both in and out of NYU!

Curious about what makes this role so meaningful? Stay tuned for our next article where you’ll hear from a current ambassador about why this has been one of their favorite NYU experiences.

Laney (she/her) is a senior (!) at the College of Arts & Science where she now majors in History after starting her NYU journey at the Tisch School of the Arts. Hailing from a small town, NYU has helped her grow in confidence, make new friends, and know that it’s okay to not know what to do with your life. Apart from being an Admissions Ambassador (and rocking the purple track jacket), she is busy fulfilling her duties as captain of the NYU Equestrian team, writing oh-so-many essays, and loving on any animal she can find…squirrels included!
