Me in Tisch my senior year:(

Applying to NYU, my heart was set on pursuing musical theater the entire four years. To me, going after an acting studio that was more acting focused, with no music or dancing training seemed unfamiliar and just so not me. But man, oh man does college change you! For the better, of course. Halfway through my second year, I began further exploring the array of acting studios Tisch Drama has to offer and I couldn’t help but feel excited to try something new. Who knew that my curiosity would lead me to a completely new drama studio my senior year!

You may not even be aware that you can switch drama studios at NYU, but it is more than possible! It isn’t something you learn you can do until around your second year. It is something I highly suggest taking advantage of. You can graduate with your BFA having studied at three or four different acting studios, all ranging in methods, philosophies, resources and connections.

What are the drama studios and how do you get placed?

Great question! So we have around eleven professional training studios, all ranging in how they approach the work and the resources they give to help you as an artist. We have acting studios being added to the list pretty often! Our newest advanced professional track studio, The Innovation Studio, is opening in Spring 2025 for their very first cohort of students!

If you were like me upon auditioning and were super excited about being apart of the New Studio on Broadway (NSB), Tisch’s only musical theater studio, then your artistic review would be a bit different from someone who is looking to hone in on their acting craft.

Your artistic review will be a factor in helping your evaluator decide which studio to place you in. I had some options 1) to only be considered for NSB or 2) to have it as my first choice, but be considered for all the other studios if they don’t see me as a fit for NSB. Lucky for me, I got placed into NSB! I didn’t find out until late May, a bit after I had found out I’d gotten into Tisch Drama as a whole.

Primary Training vs. Advanced Professional Training

My primary training was in NSB, which consisted of my first two years of school. So whichever studio you get placed in, your primary training would be in that studio. Near the end of your second primary training year, you will have something called Studio Swap Day which is one whole day dedicated to checking out and exploring other studios outside of your primary studio. I spent my day exploring the Strasberg studio and I got to try out some of their method exercises – which I absolutely loved. I knew that studio would be an amazing fit for me.

The New Studio on Broadway, in short, helped me feel more free and find who I am as an artist. I met some lovely future colleagues, built a deeper connection with my body and especially found a greater love for music and vocal performance. I felt that NSB offered so many different methodologies in approaches to acting, that it was hard for me to focus on one sole method. The type of person I am, I need a stable foundation. Though there are still tools in my acting toolbox NSB has taught me, I felt that Strasberg would offer a more straightforward acting technique.

Transitioning to Something New!

Ah! Not gonna lie, it was scary at first. I had sort of put a lot of pressure on it, since it was one of my last semesters in school – so I wanted to prove to myself I had made the right decision. But I stopped trying to “prove” it to myself and the love and motivation for Strasberg grew naturally on the very first day of class. I was getting the discipline, foundation and energy I didn’t even know I was yearning for.

I loved the straightforward and deep approach to the work the method has. It felt accessible and fun! I had always felt like acting was so ephemeral concept I would never really be able to fully grasp, but being in this studio for only three months – I can honestly say it is getting easier and easier to grasp.

I trust myself now as an artist. Perhaps that has come from being a senior or perhaps it is also the fact that I have two very different forms of training helping me understand what I want my art to look and feel like. Nevertheless, I don’t regret a single thing I’ve done in college. This decision to transition, definitely goes high on the list of the best decisions I’ve made in college.
