When you study away at NYU, you embark on an unparalleled journey in engaging with and exploring the world. NYU’s global network consists of 13 global sites and three degree-granting campuses in New York City, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai. While the educational experience of immersing yourself in a new culture is certainly exciting, what happens if you feel homesick? If you want to talk about your feelings? Or you just need some quiet time to stretch, unwind, and reset? From Buenos Aires and Berlin to Prague and Accra, each NYU academic location keeps the mental and physical health of its students top of mind. What’s more, they’re equipped with supportive staff and wellness resources focused on enhancing the well-being of their students.

In addition to on-site counselors and psychologists, students studying away have access to gyms, running clubs, and dance classes. There are wellness-related events and spaces, each unique to their global location. For example, NYU Florence offers a self-defense class. Students at NYU Buenos Aires learn to dance the tango. Additionally, the faculty and staff at NYU Los Angeles share a cookbook with students. It’s filled with healthy recipes and comfort foods. These resources and opportunities not only help ground students while they are away but also help them build a sense of community.

Creating a Home Away from Home

“I worked out and went to campus events and performances. Additionally, I participated in language conversation nights and went to the calm corner a few times. The events hosted by the University helped improve my homesickness so much. It was nice to see so many people from a lot of places coming together and sharing their cultures. It made me feel less alone.”

We got to chat and peacefully meditate while the staff guided us to find calmness and stillness in the moment. This really helped me ground myself in the midst of finals stress.”

Finding Peace Through Movement

“NYU Accra has a partnership with a nearby gym, granting students unrestricted access to its facilities. This arrangement proved immensely convenient for me. I could easily walk there after classes given its proximity to the academic center. Having the option to engage in cardio sessions on the treadmill or pursue weight training was very stress relieving.”
