NYU students are discovery seekers. When curiosity prompts exploration and research, there is no more helpful resource than our trailblazing Division of Libraries–a seven-library, six-million-volume system holding the world’s scholarship within its massive collections. With extensive virtual resources and physical locations in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai, NYU Libraries are central to the University’s intellectual community and identity as a global hub for research and innovation.

“NYU Libraries are at the center of the University’s academic and campus life,” says Courtney Hirsch, chief of staff and director of communications for the Division of Libraries. “As an academic library system, we’re different from your local public library. We support the specific educational and research needs of NYU students and faculty.”

Five of NYU’s state-of-the-art library facilities are located in New York City, including its flagship Elmer Holmes Bobst Library. Located on Washington Square, the 12-story Bobst Library welcomes 10,000 daily visitors during the school year.  What’s more, it houses millions of volumes and over 43,000 linear feet of archives.

Not sure where to start? No problem! “Our librarians are always available to answer questions and help you find information,” says Hirsch. “We have librarians who specialize in every subject.  You can connect with them for information about every major–even if you’re undecided–and any topic that interests you.”

With more than 2,800 seats for individuals and small groups, Bobst is an ideal study spot. There are even 24/7 study spaces available for NYU night owls. Additionally, Bobst recently opened three low-sensory rooms. These provide neurodiverse students dedicated spaces to support their educational success.

But Bobst, and NYU’s other libraries, aren’t just for serious study. “We have lots of comfy spaces to hang out, grab a snack, and chat with friends. Students can reserve rooms to collaborate on group projects with classmates,” says Hirsch. “We also support students’ social and emotional wellbeing through free yoga and meditation sessions, especially around finals.”

The NYU Shanghai Library is a cornerstone of academic and research excellence within NYU Libraries. The library’s collection includes 37,000 physical books, periodicals, and media materials, complemented by exclusive financial terminals and online subscriptions. “The library is the gateway to NYU’s massive physical and online resources,” says Xiaojing Zu, director of the NYU Shanghai Library.

Inclusivity is embedded in the library’s design. Its different study spaces cater to unique study needs and styles. Additionally, subject librarians offer highly personalized guidance to students throughout the research process. They help develop research strategies, navigate complex topics, and locate relevant resources.

Furthermore, the NYU Shanghai Library strongly emphasizes integrating technology into education. “We provide spaces and equipment for students to experiment with technology. We teach students to use digital tools and work hand in hand with faculty to embed technology in teaching,” says Zu.

The NYU Abu Dhabi Library’s collection includes over 88,000 physical books, 6,000 DVDs, 250,000 e-journals, 1,400 databases, and nearly three million ebooks. Like in New York City and Shanghai, students can collaborate with research librarians and archivists. Moreover, the NYU Abu Dhabi library staff are available to consult with you from first-year assignments to advanced research for senior capstone projects.

“The NYU Abu Dhabi Library offers a holistic approach to serving the needs of students on campus,” says Ron Berry. He’s the executive director of educational technology and library services at NYU Abu Dhabi. In addition to its vast collection, the library is home to student-focused departments such as Academic Technology and the Writing Center. It’s also home to the John Sexton and Lisa Goldberg Academic Resource Center, which offers academic advising and peer tutoring. “These partnerships are essential in the support of student success across all academic disciplines,” says Berry.

Access Library Resources Anywhere, Anytime

Regardless of geography NYU students across the globe can access millions of digital resources through the NYU Libraries system. If you find yourself stumped while conducting research, NYU’s helpful Ask a Librarian chat is available any time–day or night. “When you do that, don’t be surprised to find out the librarian answering your questions is working in Shanghai or Abu Dhabi,” says Xu.
