With this semester of my sophomore year coming to a fast close, finals season has certainly been an experience! As a student who tends to get overwhelmed easily, here are the ways I have been able to balance finals season and my mental health.

Finals Season as an IMA Student

Finals week at NYU looks different for different schools. Many NYU schools have “traditional” finals, like written exams or research papers. However, as an Interactive Media Arts (IMA) major, all my finals are project-focused! This semester I’m taking four IMA classes: Physical Computing, Video Art, Non-Linear Storytelling Structures, and Information Design. I am also taking a fifth class at NYU Stern School of Business for my Business of Entertainment, Media and Technology (BEMT) minor. That’s five classes total, which is four final projects and one final paper! That can be a lot at once, so here is how I close out the year strong.

The Highs and Lows

As an IMA student, my classes often require a large out-of-class time commitment. As someone who also works on campus, this can be a lot. Google Calendar has been my best friend during this process! I always add my class schedule and tour guide shifts as an Admissions Ambassador to stay organized. I also use a physical planner to keep track of all my projects and when they are due.

Lately, I have spent lots of time on the IMA floor using the laser cutters, soldering tools, and different materials. I like to work by the window, so I can enjoy a nice view as I work!

Here is my work setup near a window on the IMA floor.

While I have done a lot of work for all these projects, it is important to celebrate the small moments along the way. For example, user testing sessions (where I get to see people experience my work) have been so rewarding!

Shout-out to my classmate Athena, who volunteered to test out our project, which was an adaptation of the short story Sonny's Blues.

Taking a Step Back

I dedicate a lot of my free time to working on my projects. Whether that’s buying materials or creating art, I am always thinking about what’s next. The best way I have de-stressed is by allowing my room to be a work-free space. It’s always good to keep your work life separate from where you rest! When I am in my room, I try my best to not work and do things that relax me, so my room can be a safe space to reset my brain for the next day.

Healing Outside and Inside

Whenever I’m feeling stuck, going for a simple walk or just being outside really helps me regulate myself. Classes and work are important, but so is knowing when to take a break! For instance, while working on my final Physical Computing project, which has been the most time-consuming, I took a walk around the Brooklyn neighborhood.

Here is a park I visited during my walk.

Additionally, spending time with friends and family really helps me recharge and have a fresh headspace when coming back to work.

Shout out to my ambassa-besties Hien and Selina! We grabbed some snacks and had a homework session.

I also love going to the movies. So, I have recently seen two new movies in theatres with some friends!

Fun fact: I used the Scholastic Box Office to get my discounted movie tickets.

My Why

Although times like this can get tough, I focus on remembering how passionate I feel about art through my major. It is a process, but it is so rewarding to present a piece you are proud of. I also work hard now so my portfolio can continue to grow, making life a little easier for my future post-grad self!

Here are two final projects I just worked on.

Learning how to balance different aspects of your life is such an important skill to develop during college. Taking a moment to step back from a project can truly help. There have been times when I felt completely stuck after trying to push myself too much. A good night’s rest and finding ways to relieve stress have kept me motivated this finals season!

Jade (she/her) is a sophomore at the Tisch School of the Arts majoring in Interactive Media Arts. Representing The Bronx where Jade was born and raised, she takes on the role as an Admissions Ambassador meeting future prospective students on a weekly basis. Here she loves to talk to students about her “never heard of” major whilst sharing her experience as a first year student! She loves to attend museums in the city, going to concerts, and spending time with friends. If she is not on the Manhattan campus doing work, you can find her on the Brooklyn campus where she takes classes in a mixture of arts and technology. Some of her favorite classes include learning about chatbots and the ever-changing era of AI!
