What I Wish I Knew: NYU Abu Dhabi Student Advice

Prepare for the Core (and More Math)

Every NYU Abu Dhabi student, whether majoring in Theatre or Mechanical Engineering, takes the Core Curriculum. For many arts and humanities students, jumping into university-level math and science can feel daunting. But current students say it’s all about having the right mindset and taking advantage of on-campus resources.

“The Core Curriculum definitely confused me at first! What really helped was sitting down with the Academic Resource Center (ARC) and planning out my four years. I realized each core category has a different purpose. Don’t let being nervous convince you that you’re ‘not a math person.’ I promise you’re not the only one feeling that way! The biggest thing I’d recommend is asking questions early instead of waiting until you’re completely stuck. Go to office hours, study with classmates, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes—that’s honestly how you learn.” — Myra Rafiq, Computer Science major, Class of 2028

“It was a challenge to adapt to this new academic setting, not just because it was rigorous, but because of the change in language and content for me. What helped most, especially throughout the Foundations of Science curriculum, was the ARC peer tutors. “Never use generative AI for math assignments, especially if you’re attempting it for the first time. Instead, try to solve the entire assignment independently, then feed the class material and your answers to the AI. The Balancing Act

“I brought a diary to keep track of my to-do lists, but after two weeks, I switched entirely to an iPad. “Although it sounds very intuitive, I try my best to take breaks, whether that means sitting in silence with my friends or taking a nap. At a place like NYU Abu Dhabi, it’s very easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of socializing and trying to excel academically. It’s important to know when to take a break, reach out to professors if you’re struggling, and set boundaries with yourself. “I’ve been much more involved in my hobbies now that I am here. It is not necessarily that I have more free time, but I have found it essential to keep myself healthy. I love reading and have discovered the peaceful art of embroidery through one of my Arabic class workshops. Find a hobby that helps you escape, keeps your mind at peace, and recharges you after a long day of classes.” — Ndeye

“My biggest advice is to plan your time intentionally, and don’t underestimate the power of a good calendar! Google Calendar genuinely became my best friend. I’d block out my classes first, then dedicated study time, and then fit in everything else: club meetings, workouts, laundry, and time with friends. Time blocking kept me on top of Student Government, clubs, cricket, and research without feeling overwhelmed. It was definitely a rollercoaster, but I wouldn’t change a thing!” — Myra

Build Your Community

Stepping out of your comfort zone and leaving home behind can feel intimidating, but you’re not making the leap alone. Everyone arrives on campus eager to connect. As current students attest, building your lifelong community at NYU Abu Dhabi starts with a few easy, intentional moves.

“Talk to people. Start conversations before class, sit with someone new in the dining hall, and go to campus events. Everyone is looking to make friends during those first few weeks, so don’t be afraid to make the first move.” — Navya Dholakia, Biology major and Sport Management minor, Class of 2029

“Go to events! There are many different students there and you’re all on the same boat. Another piece of advice I’d give is before you go to campus, befriend people on social media. Many people start putting ‘NYU Abu Dhabi’ in their bios once they get accepted so it’s easy to find each other. I met some of my closest friends online first!” — Kayde

“The most important trick to making real friends is to make solid plans. Do not assume that you will see someone you liked again at another event. Instead, take their info—whether Instagram or phone number—and text them to grab a meal, get coffee, or head to a campus event together.” — Mariam

“Do not be afraid to meet people who don’t look like you or who come from different backgrounds. During Marhaba, we tend to find people from our home country, and most people stick with that group until graduation. However, this is the perfect time to make friends you wouldn’t meet anywhere else.” — Jane
