It's Game Time at NYU

Each year at NYU, 450 student athletes compete on 23 NCAA Division III varsity sports teams. Plus, 850 students face off against rival schools on 24 intercollegiate club teams. Last year alone, more than 2,400 NYU students went head-to-head on the playing field while participating in a full roster of intramural sports. Students can participate in NYU Athletics at any level.

Go Violets!

Varsity-level sports at NYU are extremely competitive. Our 23 varsity teams attract top-tier talent across all sports, including golf, swimming, wrestling, basketball, and volleyball. In 2018, Ian Rainey became the first NYU men’s swimmer to win an individual national championship. Additionally, the 2018–2019 season saw four more national championships, three by individual swimmer Honore Collins and one by the women’s golf team, the first in the program’s history. In the NACDA College Directors’ Cup standings, NYU ranked as high as No. 13 during the 2018–2019 season, finishing No. 34 out of 338 NCAA Division III institutions.

“Being an NYU athlete is like having a home inside a big city. In a city full of options, it’s amazing to be part of the excitement of NYU Athletics and feel supported by our fellow students and campus community. I’m proud to be a Violet!" -Janean Cuffee, Steinhardt, NYU Women’s Basketball

#VIOLETNATION

Violet Nation is one way the NYU Athletics community promotes school spirit. Students can join the program to receive an official T-shirt to wear to NYU home games, meets, and matches, where they can take part in special promotions, giveaways, and themed events. Plus, proceeds from the $10 membership fee support Team NYU Global, a program through which varsity athletes take volunteer trips to serve communities in need.

Play to Win at Any Level

NYU offers a wide range of club and intramural sports specifically designed to give athletes of all levels the chance to get in the game. Club teams compete against teams from other universities, making the experience more challenging, while intramural teams within NYU play against one another. For more casual fun, you can head to NYU’s Palladium Athletic Facility between classes for a game of 3-on-3 basketball, join the equestrian team, or take part in one of the many fitness events—like the 3-Point Shootout, Futsal Tournament, and the Amazing 5K Race—sponsored by the intramurals program.
