At NYU, every student has a unique story to tell. Recently, we asked three students across three schools to take disposable cameras and capture their week at NYU. From volunteering and interning to attending classes and making time for friends, each student shared a different side of what it means to be part of the NYU community. Every photo offers a glimpse into college life through their own lens.

Catherine Herber, Gallatin School of Individualized Study
Catherine Herber leads a busy life. She interns with Universal Music Group, volunteers with her sorority, and plans events with the NYU Program Board.
As part of °1824, Universal’s culture marketing and creative strategy team, she spent her week at NYU snapping photos and recording videos at concerts and industry events. This type of work provides hands-on experience for her NYU Gallatin concentration in entertainment communications through visual media.
On campus, Catherine helped organize Art Gallery Night through the NYU Program Board’s Arts Committee. What’s more, she made time to volunteer, hosting a charity bake sale with her sorority Delta Phi Epsilon and fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. All the while, her courses at Gallatin, like Fundamentals of Filmmaking and Concert Management, gave her the skills to bring her creative visions to life.

CJ Martinez, Tisch School of the Arts
Every day, sophomore CJ Martinez commutes from New Jersey to make the most of NYU—and New York City. As a Film and Television major, CJ spends time both in front of the camera and behind it. This week he performed with NYU Tisch’s all-gender a cappella group N’Harmonics. What’s more, he captured student events as a photographer for Campus Rec Media, photographing NYU Spring Club Fest as well as media day with NYU Women’s Lacrosse. In the classroom, he took a range of courses to hone his creative skills, like Art of Now.
But it’s not all work—CJ also attended a taping of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. And after an exciting day, he headed home to New Jersey to record voice-over auditions from his home studio.

Zara Sinha, Tandon School of Engineering
Student-athlete Zara Sinha balances the demands of varsity fencing with her Business and Technology Management major. This week at NYU, her athletic schedule included a tournament at Vassar College, where the team racked up multiple wins. She also found time to give back, joining her first-year teammates to volunteer at Flatbush Cats. There, she cared for feral cats and kittens while organizing the holding space.
Outside of fencing, Zara attended various NYU Tandon courses, including an entrepreneur class where groups pitched ideas for start-ups. Additionally, she took advantage of her free time, soaking up the sunshine with a day trip to the Dumbo neighborhood where she browsed the Brooklyn Flea market. Finally, her week wrapped up with a potluck with friends. “We ate too much cake and not enough veggies,” Zara recalls. “We had a lovely evening spending time with each other and eating good food.”
