Your Ultimate Packing Checklist for Moving into NYU Residence Halls
This is it. You’re out on your own, moving into your own place, probably for the first time. But before this next chapter begins, you have to pack your old life into cardboard boxes. That means answering a crucial question: What do students really need when they move into NYU’s residence halls?
To help you navigate this transition, we sat down with some of NYU’s residence hall directors. After countless move-ins, they’ve witnessed it all—and they know exactly what to pack and what to leave behind. “If there is one thing I have learned, it’s this: You probably do not need as much as you think you do,” says Samantha Jane Nelson, residence hall director for Third North. “My first year of college, I packed so many things without knowing what my room would actually feel like. By the end of the year, I found myself getting rid of so much of it.”

Your Packing for NYU Checklist
When it comes to essentials, you want to focus on function over aesthetics. TikTok might make you feel like your room needs to look perfect from day one, but your wallet and limited closet space will thank you for keeping it simple. Here is what you should actually pack:
- A capsule wardrobe: Bring your fall wardrobe and one solid winter jacket. You can have heavier items shipped later or swap clothes during a break. In New York City, rooms are cozy, so you’ll want to save space.
- Kitchen basics: If your room has a kitchen or kitchenette, follow the “2-2-2 Rule.” Bring two cooking items (one pot, one pan), two sets of utensils, and two sets of dishware (plates, bowls, cups, mugs). If you need a whisk later, there’s always Target.
- Comfortable shoes: New York City is big, so bring shoes you can wear for long days and changeable weather.
- Wall-safe decorating tools: To personalize your space safely, only use painter’s tape or Scotch poster putty.
- Some other essentials: Consider a power strip with surge protection for your electronics and a rolling hamper to simplify laundry. For light sleepers, a sleep mask and earplugs are essential.
Pro tip: Pack lightly! Our residence hall directors encourage first-year students to limit their belongings to items that will fit into a 24.5” x 34.5” moving bin (NYU makes them available to borrow on move-in day).
But Leave These at Home
Knowing what not to bring is just as important as the items you pack. Save yourself the headache and leave these items at home:
- Basics like trash bags and toilet paper: No need to buy these! They are provided at no cost in all NYU residence halls.
- Duplicate appliances: Talk to your roommates before bringing larger electronics to avoid duplicates of items such as fridges or microwaves. Keep in mind that room amenities vary by hall. For example, Clark Hall provides an in-room microwave and fridge, while in Othmer Hall, traditional rooms do not have fridges or microwaves.
- Outside furniture: Due to fire safety policies, you cannot bring your own headboards, lounge chairs, extra desks, or large furniture items.
- Harsh wall adhesives: Command hooks, double-sided tape, and heavy mounting strips will rip the drywall and result in damage charges when you check out.
- Window banners: You can’t affix anything to your windows. It is prohibited to post signs, banners, or decorations that are visible from outside the building.
- Too much storage: “Storage can wait,” says Nelson. “I see so many students arrive with giant plastic bins full of snacks and organizational systems they never end up using. Before investing in extra drawers, rolling carts, and storage towers, wait and see what you actually need and what realistically fits in your room.”
A note on prohibited items: Prohibited items present safety violations and can’t be allowed into the residence halls, so bringing them on move-in day can cause major stress. TL;DR: Leave your electric heaters, hot plates, pressure cookers, portable dishwashers, toasters, and candles at home.
