After earning my bachelor’s degree at the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study in three years, I decided to pursue a master’s program. The NYU Performing Arts Administration program stood out because of its strong reputation, hands-on approach, and alignment with my career goals. Choosing this path comes with challenges, like adjusting to a more rigorous environment. However, it also offers exciting benefits, like building on the momentum I’ve gained. I’m eager to start this journey at NYU this fall and see where it leads.

The Decision to Stay at NYU

Staying at NYU for my graduate studies felt like the right choice, both personally and professionally. Performing Arts Administration offers world-class faculty and direct access to industry professionals. Furthermore, its interdisciplinary approach aligns with my goals. The focus on practical experience, like internships with major arts organizations in New York City, convinced me this environment would help me grow.

I considered other graduate programs and a gap year to gain more experience. However, I realized staying at NYU would let me build on my strong foundation. Remaining in this community allows me to use the network and resources that supported me during my undergrad years. This will ensure a smoother transition into the next phase of my growth.

Balancing Speed and Readiness

Jumping straight into grad school after my bachelor’s degree raised concerns about burnout, readiness, and whether I had enough professional experience. I worried about being prepared for the academic rigor of the Performing Arts Administration program and whether I was rushing in without fully exploring the industry. However, after reflecting on my career goals and speaking with mentors, I realized the accelerated path aligned with my aspirations in the performing arts sector.

The fast-paced program offers a dynamic, hands-on learning experience. It allows me to build on my undergraduate knowledge while staying engaged with the industry’s rapidly changing landscape. Conversations with professors and professionals reassured me that this direct path would give me a competitive edge. It offers the right balance of academic growth and practical experience to move my career forward in arts administration.

The Value of NYU’s Performing Arts Network

One of the biggest draws of NYU’s Performing Arts Administration program is its access to the arts industry. The University’s connections with professionals, organizations, and events in New York City offer unparalleled opportunities. The program’s ties to major arts institutions provide unique chances for internships, networking, and hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning to the real world.

As an undergraduate, I worked with the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, gaining valuable experience in arts management and programming. Collaborating with professionals at such a prestigious institution has been pivotal in my growth. Additionally, being in New York City—the global arts epicenter—has been an invaluable advantage. The city’s calendar of performances, festivals, and cultural initiatives keeps me immersed in the field while building connections. These opportunities have been crucial in shaping my understanding of arts administration and enhancing my education.

Looking Ahead: Goals and Impact

As I prepare to start the Performing Arts Administration program at NYU this fall, I’m excited about how it will shape my career. I know it will give me the tools to excel in arts administration and make an impact. The hands-on learning and exposure to professionals will help refine my leadership and strategic thinking skills.

Staying at NYU gives me a unique chance to build a strong foundation for my future in arts administration. For anyone considering an accelerated path from undergrad to grad school, my advice is to trust your passion and embrace the challenges. It’s not always easy, but the connections, real-world experience, and opportunities will put you on a strong path. The journey may feel fast, but with the right mindset, it will propel you toward meaningful career goals.
