Congratulations! You’ve put in the work, navigated the uncertainty of college applications, and officially secured your spot in the NYU Tandon Class of 2030. While the transition from accepted student to Tandon Engineer comes with plenty of logistics, it’s also the start of a very specific kind of journey. You aren’t just joining a university; you’re entering a community of builders and problem-solvers located in the middle of one of the most innovative neighborhoods in the country. Here are five things to keep in mind as you prepare for your first year.
1. The “Technical Stuff”: Your Admitted Student Checklist
-
- Check your personalized portal: Your primary hub for all information, from securing housing to viewing financial aid offers, is your Admitted Student Portal. You should log in using the email address provided in your application.
- Submit your deposit: To officially reserve your place in the incoming class, you must confirm your enrollment with a tuition deposit through the portal.
- Monitor your NYU email: Once you confirm your enrollment, you will be assigned an NYU email address. Check this regularly, as the university will send all critical enrollment and orientation information here.
- Admitted Student Events: Keep an eye on the schedule for admitted students events, which includes receptions and webinars where you can meet Tandon staff and current students and get answers about campus life.
- Placement exams & documentation: Most incoming students are required to take a mathematics diagnostic test unless they meet specific waiver criteria, such as qualifying AP or IB scores. Some students will also be required to take an English
2. Living in Brooklyn: Othmer vs. Clark
Choosing where to live is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. Tandon students typically choose between two main residence halls:
-
- Othmer is the ultimate convenience hall. It’s right on the Metrotech Commons, meaning you can roll out of bed and be in your 8:00am lab in about 5 minutes. It offers both traditional and apartment style suites.
- Clark is located in the historic, beautiful Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. It’s about a 15 minute walk from campus but feels more like living in a classic NYC neighborhood. You’re right above a subway station and steps away from the Brooklyn Promenade (the best view of the Manhattan skyline).
3. Manhattan vs. Brooklyn: The Best of Both Worlds
-
- One of the biggest myths is that Tandon is isolated. In reality, you get two distinct campus experiences for the price of one.
- Brooklyn is your home. It’s tighter-knit, quieter, and more focused.
- Manhattan is only a 20 minute shuttle or subway ride away. You can take classes at the Manhattan campus, join any of the 300+ clubs, and hang out in the iconic Washington Square Park.

4. Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs)
At Tandon, school spirit isn’t just about sports, it’s about Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs). These are long-term, hands-on teams where first-years work alongside upperclassmen and faculty on massive projects. It’s the fastest way to find your people and gain real engineering experience before you even land your first internship.
5. Enjoy your senior year!
- This is the most important advice: Stop stressing. You’ve already done the hard work. You’ve got the acceptance. Now is the time to be present. Don’t Rush: You’ll have four years to be a New Yorker and a Tandon Engineer. For now, be a high school senior. Go to the games, attend prom, and spend time with your friends and family.
