So you’re interested in double majoring...

Thatʼs great! Youʼre not the first ambitious Violet to take on a double major. In fact, NYUʼs many resources help those with multiple passions find their footing in cross-school academics (one of the reasons I became a Violet myself). I knew I had a ton of passions I wanted to pursue in college, and luckily, NYU was one of the few schools offering top-ranking programs in the subjects Iʼm drawn to.

I am a double major in Tisch Drama (currently studying at Stonestreet Studios) and Steinhardt Media, Culture, and Communication (MCC)

Yeah…it sounds like a lot, and I know you might have a few thoughts. How did you double major in two different NYU schools? I thought BFA students canʼt double major? When do you sleep? All great questions, some of which I asked myself when I first realized I wanted to double major. Luckily, I found solace (and a stellar academic plan) with the help of my academic adviser.

Academic Advisers

Upon arrival at NYU, each student receives an academic adviser within their school and major. As you pick up additional major(s) and minor(s), you will get additional advisers within each program. For example, I currently have two advisers: one in Tisch Drama and one in Steinhardt MCC.

I entered NYU as a Tisch drama student: single major, nothing declared yet. However, I knew I wanted to add an additional major in the marketing and communications realm, so my academic adviser was the first person I spoke to. After meeting with him and sharing my interests and goals, he gave me a few options. Steinhardtʼs Media, Culture, and Communication (MCC) program stood out the most.

I Knew Right Away MCC Was the Double Major for Me

The beauty of the program was its flexibility. I wanted a broad double major, and the communications field fit perfectly. MCC offers a wide range of classes in many subject areas: marketing, politics, gender studies, public relations, journalism…the list goes on! My particular interests lie in marketing and PR, and MCC has tons of classes to choose from in those fields.

At the end of my first year, I marched over to the Steinhardt MCC office and proudly submitted my double major declaration form.

So...Howʼs It Going?

Great! Three years later, I love both my majors and Iʼm on track to graduate on time. I wonʼt lie—it is more work than if I stuck to one major, but itʼs work I love to do. I feel so grateful to attend a school that allows me to pursue all my passions!

Aside from the unwavering support from family and friends, I owe my deepest gratitude to my academic advisers who created a literal treasure map for me. They tracked and listed exactly which classes I needed to take and when I needed to take them in order to fulfill all the requirements for my double major. Without them (and Google Calendar), I wouldnʼt be able to get it all done.

To Any Future Violet Wondering About a Double Major...

I chose to double major because NYU offered stellar programs in both fields I felt passionate about. A word of advice…your advisers are a great resource, but ultimately, it comes down to you. If you work hard and stay organized, anything is possible—even a double major.
